Right off the top, congratulations to all of those graduating seniors out there.
Yes, this is the big weekend. Time to put on that gown and mortarboard and collect the spoils from four years of hard academic work.
(Maybe five years for some of you, but the diploma is exactly the same.)
Bring the family to CIRCA to celebrate the big event!
(The job search can wait till Monday, trust me.)
Steven Strasburg, the Nationals star pitcher, actually lost his first game of the year the other day. At the post-game news conference, Manager Davey Johnson intimated the reason that Strasbourg had pitched so poorly, is that one of his teammates had managed to apply “Hot Stuff”, an ointment, to Strasburg’s… “athletic supporter”.
(Certainly gives new meaning to “Strasburg brings the heat!”)
Speaking of pitchers with “foreign substances” where they shouldn’t be… the Roger Clemons perjury trial continues in Arlington.
(Does anybody really still care about this guy other than the U.S. Government?)
Clemons, of course, is on trial for lying to Congress.
The trial is a month old and much of the testimony has been, how do we say, less than riveting. In fact, two of the jurors have already been replaced for falling asleep during testimony.
If nothing else, I think we may have found a new way to get out of jury duty.
Just start snoring, kids.
(This trumps my previous theory of hurling racial epithets and declaring at the top of my lungs that the only “law” I recognize is that of “Star Trek”.)
DC music legend Chuck Brown died this week.
A local institution and the ”Godfather of Go-Go”, Brown had a big hit with “Bustin Loose”, which spent four weeks atop the R&B charts in 1979.
Brown played locally right up to his death at 75.
Consider it part of the true DC experience to eat a half-smoke at Ben’s Chili Bowl under the picture of Chuck Brown.
Jennifer Lopez is listed as number one on Forbes’ list of most powerful celebrities.
Oprah Winfrey is number two.
Justin Bieber is #3. Yes, Justin Bieber is number three.
(Secretly, I hope the Mayans are right.)
The Staples Center in Los Angeles, home to the Lakers, Clippers and Kings, will be home to SIX playoff games in FOUR days this weekend.
The arena is booked for hockey, with the Kings hosting the Coyotes Thursday night and Sunday afternoon. The Clippers are scheduled to host the Spurs Saturday afternoon and Sunday night in NBA playoff action.
The Lakers have the space booked for Friday and Saturday, with times to be announced.
Six playoff games in 80 hours.
The Verizon Center, on the other hand, is currently available for rental for Bar Mitzvahs…
Yes, hockey season is over in DC with the Caps taking another tough game-seven defeat.
Adding insult to injury, less than forty-eight hours after the loss to the Rangers, head coach Dale Hunter resigned, saying he wanted to return to coaching JUNIOR HOCKEY IN LONDON, ONTARIO.
Junior hockey?
Now, this may not be one of the NHL’s “glamour jobs”, but, it is the PROS.
(No offense to London, Ontario. I’m sure it is a lovely spot, home to many hockey-loving Canadians.)
Does anybody really know what a hockey coach even does?
Whatever it is, they would apparently rather do it in Ontario.
Big soccer game this weekend: The UEFA Champions League Final.
Bayern Munich of Germany will face Chelsea of England to determine the best club side in Europe.
Bayern have won the tournament four times previously, while Chelsea have yet to hoist the trophy.
Come pick a side.
Wear your soccer jerseys! Sing your favorite soccer chants! (The clean ones… please.)
All CIRCAs will have the game starting at 2pm, Saturday afternoon.
Don’t forget, Saturday afternoon also gives us the second jewel in horse racing’s “Triple Crown”, the Preakness, from Baltimore.
Now, if you can’t be there in person, the next best thing is being in a great restaurant watching the race on wide-screen TV.
(Frankly, roaming the Pimlico Raceway infield, lugging “suitcases” of warm canned beer may have sounded like a good time when you were 22, but we’ve grown up a little since then, right?)
I’m sure there will be no confusion at all with everyone at the bar all yelling “I’ll Have Another” at the same time during the race.
(Maybe we should work on hand signals…)
Race time is 6:20pm.
The weather this weekend is supposed to be perfect. The CIRCA patios will be humming.
We have NBA and NHL playoff action, the Preakness, The Champions League soccer final. Heck, we may even fit some NCAA Lacrosse in!
(Maryland v. Johns Hopkins, Saturday noon. Be there!)
Big “ups” again to the Class of 2012!
Congratulations.
(We are waiting for you in “the real world”.)
Seriously, who wants to coach the Caps?
Anybody?
CIRCA at Dupont, CIRCA at Clarendon, CIRCA at Foggy Bottom.
